The Tarjan Center at UCLA and  The State of California Department of Developmental Services: Health Development Section announce, "Innovative Approaches: Treatment for People with Developmental Disabilities & Psychiatric Disorders 7th Annual Conference."  Sponsored by: The UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior.  CME credits will be offered. Saturday, May 10, 2008 from 8:00AM – 4:00PM at the Doubletree Hotel San Jose, CA. This full-day conference will provide psychiatrists and other health and mental health professionals an overview of the special mental health needs of people with developmental disabilities.  Speakers will discuss the appropriate use of psychotropic medications in this group of individuals.  The psychiatric use of anti-convulsants will be reviewed.  Community based primary care for people with complex medical and behavioral needs will be addressed.   A conceptual framework will be presented for assessment and treatment of aggression in youth. The Margaret Jones Conference on Cerebral Palsy Management Techniques Family Forum will take place on May 3, 2008 at the UCLA Campus Faculty Center in Los Angeles, CA. Improving Access to Health and Wellness of Persons with Developmental Disabilities presented by the UCLA School of Nursing, Tarjan Center at UCLA Videoconference Thursday April 17th, 2008 from 8:30am-12:30pm.  This includes certificates of CEU's. Pathway at UCLA Extension is a new college program at UCLA for students with developmental disabilities. Dr. Raynor, Director , Tarjan Center chaired the committee that developed the program that is now implemented through UCLA's Continuing Education division. The program was featured on NBC Nightly News. Welcome
The mission of the Tarjan Center is to provide leadership in education, research and innovative practices that supports the quality of life and community inclusion of all people with disabilities. The Tarjan Center serves as a bridge between the university and persons with disabilities from state, regional and local communities, state and local government agencies and community providers.
  • Supporting children, young adults and adults with developmental disabilities and mental health, health and oral health needs;
  • Forging new alliances between individuals with disabilities, agencies and policymaking bodies in order to change policies, provide opportunities and improve services for people with disabilities, agencies and policymaking bodies in order to change policies, provide opportunities and improve services for people with disabilities in education, employment, housing, mental health, health, and arts and culture;
  • Expanding the arts and cultural community’s capacity to include individuals with disabilities and support opportunities for individuals with disabilities to pursue careers in the arts;
  • Facilitating the active engagement of people with disabilities as service members and volunteers in all levels of national and community service; and
  • Examining the impact of national and state policies on people with disabilities and their families.
